Perennial, erect herbs with rhizomatous stems, rhizome cylindric to subcylindric, or tubers globose or ellipsoid-globose. Leaves rosulate, leaf-blade entire or pinnately or palmately lobed, petioles erect, ribbed, base sheathing. Inflorescence umbellate on simple, ribbed, distally canaliculate peduncle (scape), involucral bracts mostly 4 in 2 whorls. Flowers pedicellate, bisexual, actinomorphic, epigynous. Perianth campanulate, 6-lobed, persistent or soon deciduous. Stamens 6, rarely 8, inserted on perianth-tube, anthers introrse, dehiscing longitudinally. Carpels 3, united, ovary 1-loculed, placentas 3, parietal. Fruit a berry, indehiscent. Seeds reniform or ovoid-ellipsoid, striate.
